President Donald Trump is responding after a controversial moment during Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden sparked headlines across the country.
The president attended the matchup between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night, where television cameras captured a mixed reaction from fans after Trump appeared on the arena’s giant video screen.
Some media outlets highlighted the boos that could be heard throughout the crowd. Trump, however, says the reaction was far different than many reports suggested.
Speaking with reporters outside Air Force One following the game, Trump dismissed claims that fans overwhelmingly turned against him.
“I thought it was amazing,” Trump said.
When asked specifically about the crowd’s reaction, Trump said the atmosphere inside Madison Square Garden was energetic and positive.
“It was loud. It was enthusiastic. I think it was mostly cheers,” he said.
The president was also asked whether he believes the NBA has moved away from the political controversies that frustrated many sports fans in recent years.
Trump acknowledged that the league still leans left politically but praised the NBA as one of America’s top entertainment products.
“It’s a little left wing,” Trump said. “But it’s great entertainment.”
The appearance drew national attention before the game even began.

Security was increased around Madison Square Garden ahead of Trump’s arrival, leading to the cancellation of a planned public watch party outside the arena. The additional security measures sparked debate among New York officials, sports commentators, and fans.
Among the critics was ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith, who argued that the focus should remain on the New York Knicks and their long-awaited NBA Finals run rather than politics.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also questioned whether the disruptions associated with high-profile political visits are worth the impact on fans.
Despite the criticism, Trump’s appearance instantly became one of the most talked-about moments of the night.
The president attended the game alongside his granddaughter, Kai Trump, and Knicks owner James Dolan while surrounded by a crowd of celebrities, athletes, and business leaders.
Among those in attendance were Ben Stiller, Larry David, Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey, DJ Khaled, Timothée Chalamet, and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
The game itself was historic.
Trump became the first sitting president ever to attend an NBA Finals game, adding another unique chapter to an already memorable championship series.
Whether fans heard more cheers or more boos remains a matter of debate. What is clear is that Trump’s appearance dominated conversations both inside Madison Square Garden and across social media long after the final buzzer sounded.
