President Donald Trump sharply criticized a federal judge Tuesday after a court ruling halted a key immigration policy aimed at encouraging companies to hire more American workers.
The ruling blocked a Trump administration plan that would have imposed a $100,000 fee on certain H-1B visa applications, a move supporters said would help reduce reliance on foreign labor and create more opportunities for U.S. workers.
Speaking with reporters before departing New York aboard Air Force One, Trump expressed frustration with what he described as repeated judicial roadblocks facing his administration’s agenda.
“These federal judges are really giving us a hard time,” Trump said. “It is really crazy what’s going on with the court system. They are giving us a very, very hard time.”
Trump argued that court decisions have increasingly slowed efforts to implement policies focused on immigration enforcement, border security, and protecting American jobs.
The latest dispute centers on the H-1B visa program, which allows U.S. companies to hire foreign workers for specialized positions, particularly in technology, engineering, healthcare, and other high-skilled fields.
According to the administration, the proposed fee was designed to encourage employers to invest more heavily in recruiting and training American workers before turning to overseas labor.
The policy was blocked Monday by U.S. District Judge Leo Sorokin, an appointee of former President Barack Obama. Sorokin ruled that the administration failed to adequately justify the fee structure and its impact across multiple industries.
Supporters of the proposal argue that American workers have too often been forced to compete with lower-cost foreign labor, while critics contend the H-1B program remains essential for filling specialized positions when qualified domestic candidates are unavailable.
The decision marks the latest legal battle over immigration policy as the administration continues its push to reshape the nation’s workforce and immigration system.
