Trump Ally Calls Out Democrat Socialists
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., is warning voters about the growing influence of democratic socialist candidates, arguing that the movement could gain considerably more power in Washington if Democrats win control of the House in November’s midterm elections.
The New York Republican said Sunday that Americans should examine the policies and political positions associated with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other democratic socialists when deciding which party they want controlling Congress.
Her comments add to the intensifying national debate over taxes, government spending, public safety and the ideological direction of the Democratic Party as Republicans and Democrats compete for control of the House.
Malliotakis Points to New York as a Warning
Malliotakis focused part of her criticism on Mamdani, including a new tax targeting second homes valued above $5 million. She also highlighted his previous positions involving policing and law enforcement.
Republicans have increasingly presented New York City’s political direction as an example of what they believe could happen nationally if progressive Democrats gain additional influence.
Malliotakis argued that voters should pay particular attention to candidates associated with the Democratic Socialists of America and the policies they would support if elected to Congress.
She criticized positions associated with some members of the movement, including proposals to reduce military spending, while also objecting to demonstrations involving the American flag.
“These are the candidates that will be coming to Congress as part of the commie caucus next year,” Malliotakis said, using her own description of the potential group.
She argued that maintaining the Republican House majority is necessary to prevent the Democratic Party’s progressive wing from gaining greater control over congressional legislation and spending priorities.
House Control Could Have Major Consequences
The stakes surrounding the midterm elections extend well beyond individual congressional races.
Whichever party controls the House will have significant power over federal spending, congressional investigations, committee leadership and the legislation that reaches President Donald Trump’s desk during the remainder of his current term.
Republicans are expected to emphasize taxes, immigration, government spending, crime and national security as they make their case for maintaining control of Congress.
Democrats, meanwhile, are seeking to regain the House and gain greater leverage over the Trump administration’s agenda.
For voters, the outcome could determine whether Republicans are able to continue advancing their priorities or whether Washington returns to divided government.
Malliotakis Targets Ocasio-Cortez
Malliotakis also criticized Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., over her defense of democratic socialist Francesca Hong.
Ocasio-Cortez recently discussed Hong during an ABC News interview amid attention surrounding some of Hong’s previous political positions and statements.
Malliotakis objected to Ocasio-Cortez referring to Hong as “Woke 1,” arguing that the lighthearted description failed to address legitimate concerns about Hong’s record.
“She’s trying to laugh off ‘Woke 1,’” Malliotakis said.
The Republican congresswoman specifically pointed to past controversy involving Hong’s comments about Thanksgiving, suggesting such positions could prove difficult for many mainstream American voters to accept.
A Larger Debate Over the Democratic Party
The dispute highlights an ongoing ideological debate within Democratic politics.
Traditional Democrats and democratic socialists often agree on certain issues but can differ significantly over taxation, government spending, policing, national defense and the appropriate size and role of the federal government.
Republicans have sought to make those differences a major campaign issue by arguing that progressive lawmakers could exercise considerably more influence if Democrats regain congressional power.
Democrats and their allies, however, generally argue that their economic policies are designed to provide greater assistance to working families, expand public services and require wealthy Americans to contribute more in taxes.
That disagreement gives voters two sharply different visions of how the federal government should operate.
November Could Decide Washington’s Direction
With control of the House at stake, the upcoming midterm elections could have major consequences for President Trump’s agenda and the balance of power in Washington.
A Republican majority would give the president a stronger opportunity to advance GOP priorities through Congress. A Democratic takeover could make passing major legislation more difficult while giving Democrats control of House committees and greater authority to investigate the administration.
Malliotakis is urging voters to consider not only the individual candidates appearing on their ballots but also which political faction could ultimately gain influence from their victories.
“There’s only so much Americans can take,” Malliotakis said.
As November approaches, the debate over democratic socialism, taxes, public safety, military spending and the future direction of Congress is likely to remain a prominent issue for voters across the country.
