Bill Maher Trashes Trump

HBO host Bill Maher delivered unusually sharp criticism after reports described troubling living conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, one of America’s most important nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.

Maher addressed the situation during a panel discussion on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher.”

“When I hear about troops being on a ship where the toilets aren’t working and there’s not enough food … it just makes my blood boil,” Maher said.

His remarks focused attention on an issue that can transcend traditional political divisions.

Whether a president is Republican or Democrat, Americans generally expect the federal government and military leadership to provide service members with adequate food, safe living quarters, functioning facilities and the resources required to carry out their missions.

“They may not feel like they’re there for any kind of mission that’s worth fighting for,” Anderson said.

Maher rejected that argument.

Those are not luxuries. They are fundamental requirements for maintaining military readiness.

The reports could also create a political challenge for the Trump administration.

President Trump has repeatedly emphasized rebuilding America’s military strength and projecting U.S. power abroad. His supporters have frequently praised his focus on national defense, border security and putting American interests first.

Reports of poor living conditions aboard a major U.S. aircraft carrier, however, could lead veterans, military families and taxpayers to demand answers from Navy leadership.

The central question is not whether America should maintain a strong military.

For many conservatives, that answer is obvious.

The question is whether Washington is properly managing the resources required to support the people carrying out America’s military missions.

After more than eight months at sea, the USS Abraham Lincoln is now preparing to return home.

For its approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines — and the families waiting for them — that is likely the most important development of all.

The political arguments surrounding Iran, President Trump’s military strategy and Maher’s criticism will continue. Congress and Navy officials may also face additional questions about what happened aboard the carrier and whether changes are necessary before future extended deployments.

But one principle should remain straightforward.

America can demand the world’s strongest military while also demanding that the men and women who serve in it are treated with respect.

Providing sailors with adequate food, functioning sanitation, proper medical resources and competent leadership isn’t a partisan issue.

It’s part of maintaining a military capable of defending the United States — and honoring the Americans who volunteer to do the job.
