Top Republican Silent On 1 Trump Question

President Donald Trump has already endorsed Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany in the race for Wisconsin governor, but one major question remains: Will Trump personally campaign for Tiffany before voters head to the polls?

Tiffany addressed that possibility Friday while discussing his campaign and the increasingly competitive battle for control of the Wisconsin governor’s office.

During an appearance on Newsmax’s “Wake Up America,” Tiffany was asked whether he expects Trump to join him on the campaign trail, as the president has done for Republican candidates in other important races.

Tiffany did not make any predictions.

“We’ll see what the president does,” Tiffany said, pointing to Trump’s demanding schedule and the number of critical political contests competing for the president’s attention.

Tiffany suggested that Trump’s biggest campaign priority could ultimately be protecting Republican control of Congress.

“There are a lot of races, and I think his priority, rightfully so, is the Congress of the United States, the House and the Senate,” Tiffany said.

The Republican congressman added that he would understand if Trump focuses heavily on congressional races as the GOP fights to maintain its majorities in Washington.

Trump Already Endorsed Tom Tiffany

Whether Trump ultimately makes a campaign appearance in Wisconsin remains uncertain, but Tiffany already has something potentially valuable heading into the general election: the president’s endorsement.

Trump endorsed Tiffany in January, describing the Wisconsin Republican as a dependable political ally and giving him his “Complete and Total” endorsement.

Trump also pointed to his own performance in Wisconsin during the 2024 presidential election.

That history could prove important.

Wisconsin has become one of America’s most closely divided political battlegrounds, meaning both Republicans and Democrats have reason to devote significant attention and resources to the state.

For Tiffany, Trump’s endorsement could help generate enthusiasm among Republican voters, particularly conservatives who strongly supported the president in 2024.

The larger question is whether Tiffany can build a broad enough coalition to win an open governor’s race that is attracting growing national attention.

Trump Polling Gives Democrats an Opening

Democrats, meanwhile, are expected to focus heavily on Trump’s national approval numbers as they attempt to prevent Republicans from capturing the Wisconsin governor’s mansion.

A recent Economist/YouGov survey found that 33 percent of respondents approved of Trump’s performance as president, while 62 percent disapproved.

The Economist’s polling tracker had previously reported a net approval rating of negative 25 percentage points in June.

Those numbers give Democrats an argument they are likely to use against Republican candidates aligned with the president.

However, national approval ratings do not necessarily predict the outcome of an individual governor’s race.

Wisconsin has repeatedly demonstrated that statewide elections can be exceptionally close, and voters could ultimately base their decision on state and local concerns rather than national polling.

That makes the race between Tiffany and Democratic nominee David Crowley especially important.

Tiffany Battles David Crowley for Wisconsin Governor

Tiffany is seeking to succeed Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, who is retiring rather than running for another term.

Evers has endorsed Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive and Democratic nominee for governor.

Crowley became Milwaukee County executive in May 2020. His election made him the youngest person and the first Black person to hold the position.

His primary victory also changed how some political analysts view the November governor’s race.

Sabato’s Crystal Ball shifted its assessment of Wisconsin’s gubernatorial contest toward Democrats following Crowley’s victory.

The election handicapper had previously classified the race as a toss-up when progressive Francesca Hong was expected to become the Democratic nominee.

The change suggests Republicans could face a difficult fight for the open seat.

But Wisconsin’s recent voting history also gives the GOP reasons for optimism.

Wisconsin Could Become a Major 2026 Battleground

Wisconsin’s governor’s race could develop into one of the most consequential statewide contests of the 2026 midterm elections.

The state has a long record of highly competitive elections, and Trump demonstrated in 2024 that Republicans can still assemble a winning statewide coalition there.

That puts additional attention on Tiffany’s strategy.

A Trump campaign rally could potentially energize conservative voters and generate significant media attention for the Republican nominee. At the same time, Tiffany appears prepared for the possibility that the president’s congressional priorities will leave limited time for gubernatorial races.

Trump must balance races across the country as Republicans work to maintain control of the House and Senate.

Keeping those congressional majorities would be critical to the president’s ability to move his legislative agenda through Washington during the remainder of his term.

That political calculation could determine where Trump spends his time as Election Day approaches.

Key Issues Could Decide the Wisconsin Governor’s Race

For Wisconsin voters, however, the governor’s race is likely to involve far more than endorsements and national political personalities.

Economic concerns, taxes, government spending, public safety, education, energy costs and the overall cost of living could all become significant campaign issues.

Older Wisconsin voters may also pay close attention to matters affecting retirement income, property taxes, health care expenses and the financial security of their families.

Those bread-and-butter concerns could ultimately matter more than national political polling.

Tiffany will need to persuade voters that Republican leadership can improve conditions inside Wisconsin, while Crowley will attempt to convince voters to keep the governor’s office under Democratic control.

Will Trump Campaign for Tiffany?

For now, Tiffany is leaving the door open.

He has neither announced that Trump will campaign with him nor suggested that a presidential appearance is necessary for his campaign.

Instead, Tiffany is emphasizing the political reality facing the president: Republicans have competitive races across the country, and control of Congress remains a major priority.

Trump’s endorsement nevertheless ensures that the president will remain part of the conversation surrounding Wisconsin’s governor’s race.

The real test will come when Wisconsin voters decide whether Tiffany can translate Republican enthusiasm, Trump’s endorsement and concerns about the direction of the state into a winning coalition.

With an open governor’s seat, a Republican nominee backed by the president and Democrats fighting to maintain control of the office, Wisconsin could once again find itself at the center of America’s political map in 2026.
