GOP Says Trump Accounts Can Save Social Security, You Agree?

Mamdani Picks A Fight With Trump’s ICE

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is once again calling for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a fatal immigration enforcement encounter in Houston reignited the national debate over border security, federal law enforcement, and immigration policy.

The incident has drawn attention from lawmakers, immigrant advocacy groups, and federal officials, with competing accounts of what led to the deadly confrontation.

Mamdani Demands Independent Investigation

In a statement posted Thursday on social media, Mamdani said Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican immigrant who reportedly lived in Houston for approximately 35 years, was killed during an ICE operation earlier this week.

The mayor criticized how the family learned about the incident, claiming relatives first discovered Salgado Araujo’s death through a video before receiving official notification from authorities.

Mamdani called for a full, independent investigation into the shooting and renewed his long-standing opposition to ICE.

“New York City stands with the Salgado family in demanding a full, independent investigation and real accountability,” Mamdani wrote. He also pledged support for immigrant families and concluded his statement by repeating his call to “Abolish ICE.”

The Democratic mayor has advocated eliminating ICE on multiple occasions, a position embraced by some progressive activists but strongly opposed by many Republicans and supporters of stricter immigration enforcement.

ICE Says Officer Acted in Self-Defense

Federal officials presented a significantly different account of the encounter.

According to an ICE spokesperson, preliminary information indicates Salgado Araujo allegedly drove his vehicle into an ICE vehicle during the operation. Officials said he failed to comply with repeated verbal commands before allegedly using his vehicle in an attempt to strike an ICE law enforcement officer.

The agency said the officer fired his weapon in self-defense after perceiving an immediate threat.

Salgado Araujo was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to ICE.

Family Questions Official Account

The victim’s family and several members of Congress are calling for an independent review of the shooting.

According to Salgado Araujo’s son, his father had lived in the United States for roughly 35 years and was driving to a worksite when the confrontation occurred.

Relatives are seeking additional information about the circumstances surrounding the incident and have urged investigators to conduct a transparent review.

Immigration Debate Intensifies

The Houston shooting has quickly become another flashpoint in the ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement and border security.

Supporters of ICE argue the agency plays a critical role in enforcing federal immigration law and protecting public safety, while critics contend reforms—or even the agency’s elimination—are necessary to prevent future tragedies.

As investigators continue reviewing the case, the outcome is expected to fuel renewed political debate over immigration policy, the authority of federal law enforcement officers, and the future of ICE under continued scrutiny.
