Clarence Thomas Breaks Silence On Being Black Justice

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is speaking out about the criticism he has faced over his conservative beliefs, saying some people have expected him to embrace liberal political views simply because he is Black.

Thomas discussed race, politics, his conservative philosophy and the experiences that changed his life during an interview on Sen. Ted Cruz’s “Verdict With Ted Cruz” podcast.

The longtime Supreme Court justice said that when he arrived in Washington, he quickly encountered people who believed his political views should conform to their expectations based on his race.

“When I came to this town, one of the greatest difficulties, if you think about it, was that there were those who thought that I should think a certain way,” Thomas said.

Thomas said critics sometimes suggested he was “confused” because his beliefs did not fit their assumptions.

His response was direct: “Well, I’m not confused. You’re confused.”

Thomas Rejects the Idea That Race Should Determine Political Beliefs

Thomas argued that the deeper issue is the belief that a person’s racial background should determine his or her political philosophy.

He described it as a “deterministic view” that assumes people should think a particular way because of their skin color.

For Thomas, that expectation conflicts with the principle that Americans should be treated as individuals capable of reaching their own conclusions about politics, government and society.

The comments touch on a debate that has followed Thomas throughout much of his public career. As a Black conservative who has served on the nation’s highest court for decades, Thomas has frequently faced intense criticism from political opponents while becoming an influential figure among conservatives.

Clarence Thomas Credits His Grandfather With Shaping His Values

Thomas also explained how his grandfather helped shape his appreciation for America and influenced the values he would later embrace.

“What country is better than this country with all its problems?” Thomas recalled his grandfather asking him.

The message acknowledged America’s shortcomings while emphasizing the opportunities and freedoms available in the United States.

That perspective would eventually become particularly meaningful for Thomas because his political beliefs changed dramatically during his youth.

Before becoming known for his conservative judicial philosophy, Thomas described himself as having once embraced radical left-wing politics.

One event in 1970 helped change the direction of his life.

1970 Protest Became a Turning Point

Thomas recalled attending an anti-war demonstration in Harvard Square that eventually descended into a riot.

The experience forced him to reconsider the anger and political radicalism that had influenced him at the time.

“I think that was the Road to Damascus moment,” Thomas said, using a biblical reference for a dramatic personal transformation.

Thomas described the experience as a moment when he was forced to confront where his anger was leading him.

It wasn’t merely a political turning point. According to Thomas, it also became a deeply personal and spiritual one.

Thomas Recalls Prayer That Changed His Direction

Following the riot, Thomas said he was exhausted but unable to sleep.

He walked to a chapel and prayed before the Blessed Sacrament, asking God to remove the hatred he felt in his heart.

Thomas recalled promising that if the hatred were taken away, he would not allow himself to hate again.

“And that was the moment for me, when I began to move in a more positive direction,” Thomas said.

The experience became part of a much larger transformation that ultimately moved Thomas away from the radical politics of his younger years.

Decades later, he would become one of America’s most prominent conservative jurists.

Ted Cruz Explores Thomas’ Story in New Book

Cruz, a Republican senator from Texas, has taken a deeper look at Thomas’ life and philosophy in his book, “Going Further: The Incomparable Clarence Thomas.”

The book is based on approximately nine hours of interviews with the Supreme Court justice and examines Thomas’ personal history, beliefs and legal philosophy.

Thomas’ journey is especially notable because his political evolution did not follow the path that some critics expected.

Rather than accepting the idea that racial identity should dictate political beliefs, Thomas has consistently defended individual judgment and resisted efforts to place him into a predetermined political category.

Why Thomas’ Comments Matter

The controversy surrounding Thomas illustrates a broader issue that remains important in American politics: Should someone’s race determine what political views others expect that person to hold?

Thomas’ answer is unmistakably no.
