Democrats are losing it.
Republicans secured a massive courtroom victory Friday after the Virginia Supreme Court struck down a controversial Democrat-backed redistricting plan that critics warned would heavily favor Democrats ahead of the critical 2026 midterm elections.
The bombshell ruling immediately sparked celebration among conservatives and delivered a major boost to President Donald Trump and Republican leaders fighting to maintain control of the House.
In its decision, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled that the process used to advance the redistricting proposal violated the state constitution, making the entire measure legally invalid.
The court stated that the procedure used to move the proposal forward failed to comply with Article XII, Section 1 of Virginia’s Constitution.
The ruling effectively wipes out the voter-approved redistricting effort that Democrats hoped would dramatically reshape Virginia’s congressional map for years to come.
The proposal narrowly passed during a statewide referendum by a 51% to 49% margin and would have temporarily handed redistricting authority to Virginia’s Democrat-controlled legislature through 2030.
Republicans argued the plan was designed to weaken GOP representation and create a long-term political advantage for Democrats in Washington.
Political observers estimated the new map could have produced a staggering 10-1 Democrat advantage in Virginia’s congressional delegation, despite the state remaining politically competitive. Republicans currently hold five of Virginia’s 11 congressional seats.
Conservatives quickly praised the court’s decision as a major victory for election fairness and constitutional law.
President Trump reacted almost immediately on Truth Social, calling the ruling a huge win for both Republicans and the country.
“The Virginia Supreme Court has just struck down the Democrats’ horrible gerrymander,” Trump wrote.
“Huge win for the Republican Party, and America, in Virginia.”
Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones, a Democrat, sharply criticized the ruling and accused the court of disregarding voters who supported the referendum.
Jones said his office is reviewing possible legal options moving forward, though it remains unclear whether Democrats will attempt to appeal the case further.
Republicans across the country celebrated the decision.
Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters described the ruling as a “HUGE WIN” for election integrity and accused Democrats of attempting to push unconstitutional congressional maps.
Former Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin also praised the ruling, arguing Democrats knowingly ignored constitutional concerns while trying to reshape the state’s political landscape.
“This was the most obvious violation of Virginia’s Constitution,” Youngkin said.
Former Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares echoed those concerns and said earlier legal warnings about the proposal were ignored by Democrat lawmakers.
Meanwhile, Democrats blasted the ruling as politically motivated.
Suzan DelBene claimed the court overturned the will of Virginia voters and warned the decision could impact future election battles nationwide.
The Virginia fight is now becoming part of a much larger national showdown over congressional redistricting as both parties prepare for the 2026 midterms.
Republicans are working aggressively to protect their narrow House majority, while Democrats hope to regain control of Congress and block Trump’s legislative agenda during his second term.
Trump has repeatedly discussed the importance of congressional maps in maintaining Republican power heading into future elections.
Last year, he floated the possibility of additional redistricting efforts in Republican-led states, including Texas, where Republicans are looking to strengthen GOP congressional advantages before the next election cycle.
With control of Congress potentially hanging by only a handful of seats, Friday’s Virginia ruling could become one of the most important political victories for Republicans before the 2026 midterm elections.
