President Donald Trump is considering a bold new addition to Washington, D.C. — a large ceremonial arch near some of the nation’s most iconic landmarks.
During a White House reception on Sunday, Trump confirmed that his administration is exploring plans for what he described as a “triumphal” arch to be built near the Lincoln Memorial, across from Arlington National Cemetery. He said longtime adviser and former speechwriter Vince Haley has been asked to help oversee the concept.
“We have something very special planned,” Trump told guests. “We’re talking about a triumphal arch — something Washington has never had.”
A Major Landmark Proposal
According to Trump, the proposed structure would be located near the Arlington Memorial Bridge, placing it between two of the most visited and historically significant areas in the capital.
He noted that many major world cities feature similar monuments and argued that Washington has long been missing such a symbol.
“Washington is the only major capital city without a triumphal arch,” Trump said. “It’s something that belongs here.”
The idea first drew attention in October after a photograph taken inside the White House appeared to show a map of the capital with a new arch positioned along the Potomac River. Since then, the concept has continued to circulate, though official design and construction details have not yet been released.
Design Ideas and Public Reaction
Trump has previously shared architectural images and renderings on Truth Social, including a proposed design attributed to architect Nicolas Leo Charbonneau of Harrison Design. It remains unclear whether that firm is formally involved or whether the images were conceptual.
Supporters say the project reflects Trump’s preference for large-scale national projects and could create jobs while enhancing tourism in the capital. Critics, meanwhile, have questioned the timing and necessity of such a project, arguing that federal resources should be focused elsewhere.
Some political figures on the left have used the proposal to criticize Trump’s priorities, while commentators and cartoonists have attempted to mock the idea on social media.
Part of a Broader Vision
The arch proposal comes as Trump has also backed updates and renovations to the White House, noting that nearly every modern president has made changes to the historic property during their time in office.
Trump has framed the potential monument as part of a broader effort to strengthen national identity and leave a lasting mark on the capital.
“Every time people cross that bridge toward the Lincoln Memorial, they say something should be there,” Trump said previously. “We’ve looked at different versions. This is real.”
No Timeline Yet
At this stage, the administration has not announced a construction schedule, cost estimate, or final design. Whether the project moves forward will likely depend on congressional approvals, funding discussions, and public input.
Still, Trump made clear that he believes the concept fills a long-standing gap in Washington’s landscape.
“We’re going to have something truly special,” he said.
As debate continues, the proposed arch is already drawing attention as another example of Trump’s distinctive approach to reshaping Washington — one that supporters say emphasizes national pride and lasting legacy.
