Trump Picks Up Massive Endorsement, Democrats Rage

On Sunday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a member of the Republican party, publicly declared his endorsement for the 2024 presidential nomination of former President Donald Trump via a social media announcement. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Governor Abbott expressed his pride in endorsing Donald J. Trump for the presidency, citing the need for a leader who will prioritize national security and secure the border, with Trump being the preferred candidate for the job.

According to Fox, the announcement took place during a joint event in Edinburg, Texas, where the former president joined Governor Abbott for an annual pre-Thanksgiving tradition. This tradition involves serving tamales to Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Texas National Guardsmen deployed along the southern border as part of Governor Abbott’s Operation Lone Star program. The event aimed to bring attention to the contentious issues of illegal immigration and border security.

The border situation has been a focal point for Republican voters and party leaders for an extended period, leading to criticism of the Biden administration’s handling of the crisis and the increase in border crossings by migrants.

Former President Trump, if re-elected, has pledged to initiate the largest mass deportation effort in U.S. history. Additionally, he intends to reinstate travel bans and revive the “Remain in Mexico” program from 2019, requiring non-Mexican asylum seekers to await case resolution in Mexico.

In the 2022 election cycle, Trump endorsed Governor Abbott for re-election, where Abbott secured the Republican renomination in March 2022 and went on to defeat Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke in November for a third term as governor.

Governor Abbott, reportedly appreciative of Trump’s endorsement in the previous cycle, is reciprocating the support. Trump, currently in his third consecutive bid for the White House, holds a commanding lead in the polls for the 2024 Republican nomination. Other contenders, such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, are trailing significantly behind in the race.

Trump’s lead has further solidified, partly due to historical developments, as he became the first former or current president in U.S. history to face four indictments. These indictments, including charges related to attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in federal court in Washington D.C. and in Fulton County court in Georgia, have contributed to increased support among Republican voters.
