Canada’s Conservatives Trash Trump
Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s Conservative Party, has strongly rejected President-elect Donald Trump’s recent suggestion that Canada could become the 51st state of the United States. Poilievre made it clear in a statement posted on X that this is an idea he finds unacceptable.
“Canada will never be the 51st state. Period. We are a proud, sovereign nation,” Poilievre declared. “We cherish our independence, and we are a steadfast ally to the United States, not a subordinate.”
The Conservative leader went on to highlight the deep, longstanding relationship between the two nations. “We have stood shoulder to shoulder with the U.S. in times of crisis, including the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Thousands of Canadians risked their lives, and many paid the ultimate price in support of the U.S. in the war against terrorism,” Poilievre reminded. He also pointed to Canada’s role as a major supplier of energy to the U.S., providing billions of dollars in high-quality, dependable energy at below-market prices. Additionally, he emphasized Canada’s robust trade ties, purchasing hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of American goods each year.
Poilievre’s comments come in response to weeks of Trump speculating about Canada potentially joining the U.S. The former president even suggested he would use “economic force” to make it happen, though he dismissed the idea of military action.
In his statement, Poilievre took the opportunity to criticize the current NDP-Liberal government, describing them as ineffective. “Our current leaders have failed to defend Canada’s sovereignty and interests,” he said. “When I am Prime Minister, I will ensure that Canada is strong, independent, and respected on the global stage.”
Poilievre laid out his vision for the future, promising to rebuild Canada’s military, strengthen border security, and safeguard the Arctic from foreign threats. “We will restore Canadian control over our own resources, lower taxes, and cut unnecessary red tape to foster economic growth. Above all, we will put Canada First,” he concluded.
