Trump’s Warning To Canada And Mexico

President Trump announced on Thursday that he intends to follow through with his promise to impose a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from Mexico and Canada, starting this Saturday. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump made it clear that this move is about addressing multiple critical issues, including the ongoing migrant crisis at the southern border, the flood of fentanyl pouring into the United States, and the substantial trade deficit the U.S. carries with its neighbors to the north and south.

“We’re going to announce the tariffs on Canada and Mexico for several reasons,” Trump said. “Both countries have been taking advantage of us for years. We’ve been running massive trade deficits with them, and we’ve been very unfairly treated when it comes to trade deals. It’s time to level the playing field.”

Trump’s remarks are a continuation of his aggressive stance on trade, which he first outlined during his 2024 re-election campaign. He had warned that unless Mexico took stronger action to stop the illegal migration at the border, a tariff of 25 percent would be placed on all imports from the country, the U.S.’s top trading partner. This threat later expanded to include both Canada and China, as Trump argued these nations were not living up to their fair trade obligations.

While some experts have raised concerns that such tariffs could lead to higher costs for American consumers—particularly on products like cars and electronics—Trump is firm in his belief that the U.S. should not continue to be at a disadvantage in trade deals. He also suggested that oil imports from Canada and Mexico could be included in the tariffs, depending on the prices and how these countries “treat us” in the future.

“Mexico and Canada have been getting away with bad trade practices for too long, and it’s time to put an end to that,” Trump concluded. “We don’t need the products they send us. We have alternatives, and we’re going to take strong action to protect American jobs and our economy.”
