Trump Criticizes The NFL’s New Rule

Former President Donald Trump recently criticized the NFL’s new kickoff rules, arguing that the league shouldn’t change something that was already successful. He expressed his discontent on Truth Social after attending a game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Jets, stating that tinkering with the rules could lead to negative outcomes.

The NFL introduced these changes this season to enhance kickoff returns while addressing player safety concerns. Now, while kickoffs still occur from the 35-yard line, players on the kicking team must start with one foot on the opponent’s 40-yard line. They cannot move until the ball hits another player or the ground in specified areas. Meanwhile, the receiving team is required to position several players between their own 30- and 35-yard lines, also limiting their movement until the ball is in play. These modifications aim to reduce high-speed collisions, which have historically led to injuries.

On the podcast “Bussin’ with the Boys,” Trump reiterated his dislike for the new rules, describing them as unattractive. He also reflected on his casual experiences with football, suggesting he preferred a different style of play and did not appreciate aggressive players.

Trump’s connection to football is notable; he previously owned the New Jersey Generals in the USFL. His opinions on the NFL’s direction resonate with many fans who share concerns about player safety and the game’s integrity. Additionally, during the game, a Steelers fan caused a stir by invading the field with a pro-Trump sign, highlighting the intersection of sports and politics. The Jets’ owner, Woody Johnson, was appointed as U.S. ambassador to the UK during Trump’s administration, further linking their stories.
