In a stunning turn of events, President Biden and former President Trump are set to engage in a presidential debate on June 27, hosted by CNN. This event will mark the initial head-to-head encounter between the leading candidates from the major parties ahead of the 2024 election and their respective conventions.

Biden announced his acceptance of CNN’s debate invitation through a post on the social platform X, stating, “I’ve received and accepted an invitation from @CNN for a debate on June 27th. Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, any time, any place.”

Trump, in a statement to Fox News Digital, confirmed his participation, expressing his eagerness for the event in Atlanta.

CNN confirmed that the debate would take place at their Atlanta studios without an audience, broadcasting live on CNN, CNN International, CNN en Español, and CNN.com.

Earlier on Wednesday, Biden’s campaign proposed the first debate for late June, following the president’s return from the Group of Seven summit in Europe and the anticipated conclusion of Trump’s hush money trial in New York. They also suggested a second debate in September, before the commencement of early voting in many states, and a vice presidential debate in late July, post-Republican National Convention.

Breaking away from tradition, the Biden campaign announced its intention to collaborate directly with media organizations to arrange the debates, bypassing the Commission on Presidential Debates, which has been organizing these debates since 1988. Jen O’Malley Dillon, Biden’s campaign chair, recommended involving media outlets that hosted the GOP primary debates in 2016 and the Democratic primary debates in 2020 to ensure impartiality.

Trump’s contentious relationship with CNN is well-known, as he frequently criticized the network and its personnel as “fake news” during his first term. His recent town hall on CNN, moderated by Kaitlan Collins, drew significant backlash due to his interruptions and false claims about election fraud.

Biden’s recent interview with CNN anchor Erin Burnett featured his prediction that Trump would not accept the 2024 election results if he were to lose.

CNN’s announcement of the debate coincided with Warner Bros. Discovery’s presentation to potential advertisers at the annual UpFront event in New York City. The network stated that further details, including the moderators for the debate, would be disclosed later.
