Schiff Calls Jan. 6 Trump Pardons ‘Unwise’, You Agree?

McConnell Trashes Trump

In a recent interview, former Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) expressed strong disapproval of former President Donald Trump’s decision to pardon individuals involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot. This group of pardoned individuals includes many who faced serious charges for violent actions against law enforcement during the events of that day. McConnell, who has long been a strong advocate for law and order, made it clear that he believes no one should be excused for engaging in violence, particularly violence against police officers.

At least 600 rioters were formally charged with assaulting, resisting, or obstructing law enforcement, making their actions an undeniable part of the Capitol attack. McConnell told Semafor that such behavior cannot be overlooked or justified. His statement echoed remarks made earlier by Vice President Mike Pence, who also asserted that only those who engaged in peaceful protest should be considered for pardons. Pence made his position clear on Fox News Sunday, noting that those who resorted to violence on January 6th should not receive any form of clemency.

Although McConnell stepped down from his leadership role in the Senate, his influence within the GOP remains significant. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) acknowledged McConnell’s enduring power, stating that when the former leader speaks, the party listens. McConnell’s open criticism of Trump’s decisions, particularly regarding the pardons, marks a rare moment of direct opposition from within the Republican Party. Most GOP figures have avoided criticizing Trump’s actions, choosing instead to focus on what they perceive as missteps by President Joe Biden, such as his last-minute pardons for family members.

While McConnell’s comments are a clear departure from Trump’s position, they also signal that he is not afraid to stand firm in his principles, even if it means challenging the direction of his own party.
