The strained relationship between Michelle Obama and the Bidens, compounded by her aversion to partisan politics, has notably kept her from actively campaigning for President Joe Biden, despite her widespread popularity.

Tensions between the Obamas and Bidens began escalating in 2015 after Joe Biden, then Vice President, contemplated a presidential bid against discouragement from President Barack Obama. Tragedy struck the Bidens when Beau Biden, Joe Biden’s son, succumbed to cancer. Complicating matters further, Hunter Biden became romantically involved with Beau Biden’s widow, leading to a contentious divorce from Kathleen Buhle in 2017.

Michelle Obama’s apparent disillusionment with the Biden family’s handling of these personal matters has translated into her absence from Biden-related events.
