Trump Winning Over Independents
Recent polling data reveals that former President Donald Trump enjoys a significant lead over Vice President Kamala Harris among Independent voters in Michigan, with Trump leading by 25 percentage points, 55% to 30%. This substantial margin is largely attributed to Trump’s strong stance on supporting infertility treatments. The data, released by Co/efficient, highlights that Trump’s commitment to covering the costs of in vitro fertilization (IVF) has resonated deeply with many voters.
During a recent visit to Michigan, Trump emphasized his administration’s plans to mandate insurance coverage for all IVF-related expenses, stating, “Under the Trump administration, your government will ensure that your insurance company covers every cost associated with IVF treatments. Our goal is to encourage more families to grow. Additionally, we will permit new parents to deduct significant newborn expenses from their taxes.” This policy stance has clearly struck a chord, as 27% of voters indicated this proposal makes them more inclined to support Trump’s 2024 bid, compared to 17% who are less likely to back him.
The poll also shows that a majority of Independents, 66%, support insurance coverage for infertility treatments. This sentiment is mirrored across party lines, with 66% of Republicans and 76% of Democrats also in favor. The survey, conducted by Co/efficient from September 4 to 6 among 931 likely voters, underscores the broad appeal of Trump’s healthcare proposals.
For context, Forbes reported in 2023 that a single IVF cycle, which includes ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, and embryo transfer, can cost between $15,000 and $30,000. These expenses can be exacerbated by medication costs, which may constitute up to 35% of the total charges. This makes Trump’s policy proposal particularly relevant to those facing the financial burdens of infertility treatments.
