Secret Service Failed To Secure Trump Golf Course?

The Secret Service recently disclosed a troubling lapse in security during a golf outing for former President Donald Trump at his own Trump International Golf Club. The agency admitted that it did not conduct a thorough sweep of the golf course’s perimeter prior to Trump’s visit, a critical oversight that left the former president vulnerable to a potential threat.

On Sunday, a would-be assassin named Ryan Wesley Routh was apprehended after being spotted by a vigilant Secret Service agent. This agent noticed Routh’s “AK-47-style rifle with a scope” partially concealed among the bushes near the golf course. At a press conference, Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe acknowledged that a perimeter sweep had not been conducted because Trump’s golf outing was not on the official schedule for that day. Despite this lapse, Rowe praised the agent who, by thoroughly sweeping the area ahead of Trump, successfully prevented Routh from targeting the former president.

Rowe highlighted that the agent’s prompt actions were crucial in safeguarding Trump. “There was a front element that did its job by identifying this individual, who was in the wood line,” Rowe said. “The agent’s swift actions ensured that the president, who was several hundred yards and multiple holes away, remained out of sight from the gunman, thus averting a potentially catastrophic situation.”

This incident comes on the heels of a previous security failure in July, where a gunman managed to shoot Trump in the ear and kill a rally attendee, Corey Comperatore. Following that attack, the head of the Secret Service resigned amid intense scrutiny over the agency’s handling of the incident.

Since taking over as Acting Director in July, Rowe has faced significant challenges in restoring confidence in the agency’s security protocols. As Routh now faces both federal and state charges, Governor Ron DeSantis has called for Florida to lead the prosecution, emphasizing that Routh’s actions represent a breach of state law. This incident underscores the pressing need for heightened vigilance and accountability within the Secret Service to ensure the safety of our nation’s leaders.
