Hegseth Meets With Doubtful Republican
President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, is working hard to secure the necessary support for his confirmation. This week, Hegseth met again with Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a pivotal figure in the confirmation process who has expressed concerns about his candidacy. Their second meeting in just a few days comes as Hegseth faces growing pressure from Trump’s allies, who are pushing for his swift confirmation.
Hegseth, a veteran of the military and a Fox News contributor, spoke positively about the meeting, calling it “great” and noting that it focused on their shared dedication to improving the Pentagon’s support for warfighters. “Senator Ernst has long been committed to making the Pentagon work for our men and women in uniform,” Hegseth said. “We had productive, detailed discussions on that, and I truly appreciate her commitment to the process. We look forward to collaborating further.”
While Hegseth is optimistic about the dialogue, Ernst has yet to fully endorse him. She has been clear about the need for a thorough vetting process before giving her support, especially given her advocacy on military sexual assault and her personal experience as a survivor. During a recent panel discussion, Ernst made it clear that any nominee for Defense Secretary must address these issues directly. “I want to hear more about how Hegseth plans to address sexual assault in the military and the role of women in our armed forces,” she said.
Ernst’s stance is crucial. As a retired lieutenant colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard, she holds significant sway on the Senate Armed Services Committee, where Hegseth’s nomination will be reviewed. If she opposes him, his chances of confirmation could be severely damaged. Hegseth has already faced allegations of sexual assault from a 2017 incident, which he denies, stating that the encounter was consensual, and he was never charged.
As the confirmation process moves forward, it’s clear that Hegseth will have to address tough questions and win over skeptical voices like Ernst if he is to lead the Pentagon. His relationship with senators like her will be critical in determining whether he gets the chance to implement the vision for defense that Trump has laid out.
