Another Democrat Joins The GOP
In a significant political shift, a second Democratic lawmaker in Florida has switched parties to join the Republican ranks this month. State Representative Hillary Cassel made the decision after expressing concerns about her former party’s lack of strong, consistent support for Israel, and its growing embrace of extreme progressive ideologies.
In a statement shared on social media, Rep. Cassel, who is Jewish, explained that her decision to leave the Democratic Party was not made lightly. She criticized the party’s failure to stand firmly with Israel, as well as its increasing tolerance for voices within the party that justify or condone violence and terrorism. “As a proud Jewish woman, I cannot remain in a party that does not reflect my values, especially when it comes to standing with Israel,” Cassel stated. “The current Democratic Party has strayed so far from the needs and concerns of everyday Floridians, and I can no longer support it.”
While acknowledging that she may not agree with every Republican on every issue, Cassel emphasized that the Republican Party offers a more constructive and collaborative environment. “The GOP’s focus on finding common-sense solutions to the challenges facing our state resonates with me,” she said. “I want to make my community and Florida better, and I believe that the Republican Party offers the best path forward to achieve that.”
Cassel’s decision to join the GOP follows a similar move by State Representative Susan Valdés, who switched parties earlier this month after losing a bid to chair the Hillsborough County Democratic Party. Valdés, like Cassel, cited a growing disconnect with the Democratic leadership and a desire to serve her community without being sidelined by party infighting.
While neither switch significantly changes the Republican supermajority in Florida’s legislature, these defections are a clear sign of the state’s shifting political landscape. Once a battleground state, Florida is increasingly solidifying its place as a stronghold for conservative values and Republican governance.
State House Speaker Daniel Perez welcomed Cassel to the GOP in a public statement, praising her commitment to working across party lines to solve Florida’s most pressing issues. “Rep. Cassel’s decision to join the Republican Conference shows that our party is the one that truly represents the values and priorities of Floridians,” he said.
As Florida continues its transformation into a Republican stronghold, these defections serve as a reminder of how the state’s political tides have shifted in recent years. For Cassel and others like her, the Republican Party now offers a platform where they feel their principles and concerns will be heard and respected.
