Trump Sparks Outrage With Republican Voters

Some individuals on the right are expressing disapproval of ex-President Donald Trump’s recent statement, in which he stated that he would never attack California Governor Gavin Newsom since the liberal Democrat was “extremely kind” to him.

In transcript provided by Fox, Trump stated, “You have a very ambitious guy in California, but he’s done a terrible job with the state. I used to get along great with him when I was president. Got along really good … Gavin.”

Fox’s Tucker Carlson who appeared shocked by the comment then asked, “You got along with Gavin Newsom?”

Trump replied, “I did. I really did. He was always very nice to me, said the greatest things. He would say things like, ‘He’s doing a great job.’”

“About you?” perplexed Carlson asked.

Trump responded, “About me, that’s why I could never hit him because he was so nice to me, just laying in wait right? But he was very nice to me, relatively speaking.”

Some conservatives pushed back against Trump’s remarks, rejecting the idea that he had held back in his criticism of one of the country’s most prominent left-leaning politicians.

Conservative commentator Kurt Schlichter condemned Trump’s comments and said, “I’m really disappointed in Trump over his kissing up to Gavin Newsom. This leftist monster is A-OK because he’s been nice to Trump? Conservative @GovRonDeSantis is awful because he has not been nice lately? What the hell? Has Trump learned nothing at all?”

Allies of Trump defended him against the criticism and claimed that some media outlets had selectively edited out the portion where Trump criticized Newsom’s performance, insinuating that the pushback was a covert attempt by supporters of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is widely speculated to run against Trump in the 2024 presidential primaries.

Even Donald Trump Jr. jumped into the ring to defend his father’s comments:
