Trump Issues Chilling Warning To Republicans
Republican lawmakers better be listening.
In the midst of escalating tensions surrounding the U.S-Mexico border, former President Donald Trump issued a stern warning on Monday, characterizing the proposed border bill as a “death wish” for Republicans. The U.S. Congress has been actively pursuing legislation to address what Republicans have labeled a “border crisis,” responding to a surge in asylum seekers entering the country. Data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) revealed over 2.4 million encounters at the border during the 2023 fiscal year, a notable increase from approximately 1.7 million in 2021.
Despite the urgency, the Republican-controlled House appears hesitant to endorse the bipartisan bill put forth by a coalition of Democratic and Republican senators. Conservative hardliners within the party argue that the proposed legislation falls short of effectively curbing illegal immigration into the United States. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, had previously expressed skepticism, asserting that the Senate deal would face insurmountable challenges in the House.
Taking to Truth Social on Monday, Trump criticized the bipartisan bill as details of the $118-billion agreement emerged on Sunday night. In his statement, Trump asserted that voting for the “horrendous Border Bill” would be a misguided move, emphasizing the bill’s provision for Shutdown Authority only after 5,000 daily encounters, despite existing rights to close the border immediately. He characterized the bill as a significant advantage for Democrats and a potentially disastrous decision for the Republican Party.
The bipartisan legislation aims to tackle critical issues at the southern border by increasing ICE detention capacity from 34,000 to 50,000 and allocating $20 billion towards immigration enforcement.
