In the 2024 election cycle, tech mogul Elon Musk emerged as one of the most influential financial supporters of President-elect Donald Trump, with reports showing he contributed at least $250 million to help propel Trump back to the White House. According to filings with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Musk donated nearly $239 million to America PAC, the super PAC backing Trump’s campaign. These funds, which included both direct and in-kind contributions, were crucial in funding efforts to get out the vote, including canvassing, digital ads, and direct mail.
Musk’s financial backing became particularly evident in the final weeks leading up to the election. In late October, he made three significant $25 million contributions to America PAC, totaling $75 million. This super PAC ran highly publicized initiatives, including a controversial lottery offering $1 million prizes to voters in key battleground states, which sparked legal challenges. Despite the criticism, the initiative continued, and Musk’s PAC spent over $40 million on the lottery program alone.
In addition to his support for America PAC, Musk funded another super PAC, RBG PAC, which aimed to moderate Trump’s stance on abortion. Musk was the sole donor to this PAC, contributing $20.5 million through his revocable trust in late October. The group’s message aligned with Trump’s position, claiming that both he and the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg believed abortion policy should be left to the states, not dictated by the federal government. RBG PAC spent its resources on targeted digital ads, text messages, and mailers to promote this message.
Musk also supported the MAHA Alliance, a group associated with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., giving $3 million in late October to help persuade Kennedy’s supporters to back Trump after the independent candidate dropped out of the race.
Through these multiple donations, Musk solidified his position as one of Trump’s largest and most influential donors in the 2024 election cycle. His financial contributions and involvement didn’t end with the election; Musk has remained close to Trump, frequently visiting Mar-a-Lago and even advising the president-elect on key decisions. Shortly after Trump’s victory, Musk was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, a new advisory board focused on reducing government spending.
