This was shocking to see.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has spent years as one of the most recognizable faces of America’s progressive movement. Now, however, a socialist faction is delivering a surprisingly harsh message about her political future.
The Democratic Socialists of America’s Liberation Caucus is publicly rejecting the idea of Ocasio-Cortez becoming a presidential standard-bearer for the socialist movement in 2028.
And the reason may surprise Americans who have long viewed the New York Democrat as one of the most progressive members of Congress.
The Liberation Caucus argues that AOC has moved too far away from its socialist agenda.
The dispute offers a revealing look at the growing divisions on the political left as speculation continues over whether Ocasio-Cortez could seek the presidency or another higher office in 2028.
Socialist Faction Turns Against AOC
In a sharply worded statement, the DSA Liberation Caucus condemned what it described as Ocasio-Cortez’s retreat from socialist politics.
The group rejected attempts to portray the congresswoman as the future presidential representative of either the DSA or the broader socialist movement.
It also accused Ocasio-Cortez of political opportunism, arguing that several of her more recent positions conflict with the principles she promoted earlier in her career.
One of the biggest disagreements involves Israel.
The Liberation Caucus has criticized Ocasio-Cortez over her approach to the Israel-Palestinian conflict, maintaining that she has failed to meet the faction’s expectations on Palestinian advocacy and anti-Zionism.
That disagreement has been building for some time.
DSA Previously Withdrew Its AOC Endorsement
In 2024, the DSA’s National Political Committee pulled its provisional backing of Ocasio-Cortez, citing disagreements over whether her positions met the group’s expectations on Palestinian issues.
Among the issues raised was Ocasio-Cortez’s participation in a public panel involving the Jewish Council for Public Affairs.
The organization also objected after AOC joined other House Democrats in supporting a statement affirming Israel’s right to maintain defensive systems.
Ocasio-Cortez had voted against additional weapons funding for Israel, but that did not resolve the disagreement with her socialist critics.
The controversy illustrates just how significant the divide has become.
A politician widely identified with America’s progressive left is now being attacked from further left for allegedly compromising too much.
AOC’s Comments About “Defund The Police” Add Fuel To The Fire
Israel isn’t the only subject driving the feud.
The Liberation Caucus also targeted Ocasio-Cortez over recent comments about the progressive politics of 2020.
During an ABC interview, AOC distanced herself from some of the rhetoric surrounding the “defund the police” movement and described elements of the political environment from that period as excessive.
Her socialist critics were not impressed.
The Liberation Caucus accused Ocasio-Cortez of benefiting from the activist energy surrounding policing and racial-justice protests during her political rise, only to distance herself from some of those positions as her national profile grew.
The group described that shift as evidence of political opportunism.
For AOC, the criticism demonstrates a difficult challenge that could become even more important if she seeks national office.
Positions that might help a candidate appeal to a wider Democratic electorate can simultaneously anger activists demanding adherence to a more uncompromising ideological platform.
Socialist Organization Pushes Sweeping Changes To Government
The dispute is especially notable because of the broader agenda being promoted by the Democratic Socialists of America.
The DSA has unveiled a program called “Workers Deserve More,” which advocates sweeping changes to the structure of the federal government.
Among its proposals are eliminating the U.S. Senate, the presidency and the Supreme Court in their existing forms.
The organization has indicated that candidates seeking its formal endorsement are expected to accept and promote its program.
That creates a potentially enormous conflict if Ocasio-Cortez eventually launches a presidential campaign.
The Liberation Caucus has already made its position clear: it does not believe socialists should rally behind an AOC campaign for the White House.
The faction argues that electing Ocasio-Cortez president would produce additional compromises with America’s existing political and economic institutions rather than achieving the fundamental changes it wants.
There’s One Important Catch
The story is more complicated than simply saying the entire socialist movement has abandoned Ocasio-Cortez.
The New York City DSA chapter has repeatedly supported AOC during her congressional campaigns.
That means there are substantial divisions within the movement itself.
The Liberation Caucus has criticized the relationship between the NYC chapter and Ocasio-Cortez and suggested that broader disagreements could create further tension between local activists and the national organization.
In other words, AOC hasn’t lost every socialist ally.
But she is facing unusually aggressive opposition from activists who believe her politics are no longer sufficiently aligned with their objectives.
Could Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Run For President In 2028?
That question is becoming increasingly important.
Ocasio-Cortez has not formally announced a 2028 presidential campaign, nor has she announced a Senate bid.
Still, her name continues to appear in discussions about the Democratic Party’s future.
As one of the most famous younger Democrats in Washington, Ocasio-Cortez would immediately attract enormous attention if she decided to seek the White House.
A presidential campaign, however, would likely require her to appeal far beyond the progressive voters who helped build her political career.
That could create an ideological balancing act.
Moving toward the political center on certain issues might expand her appeal among Democratic primary voters while simultaneously creating more resistance from socialist organizations demanding stronger commitments to their agenda.
The Liberation Caucus appears unwilling to wait for an official announcement before taking sides.
Its answer to an AOC presidential candidacy is already no.
Who Exactly Is The Liberation Caucus?
The political philosophy of the group attacking Ocasio-Cortez is an important part of the story.
Established in 2025, the DSA Liberation Caucus identifies itself as a faction within the Democratic Socialists of America that follows Marxist-Leninist-Maoist ideology.
The organization openly promotes revolutionary socialist ideas and has published material defending Maoism against common historical criticisms.
That context makes the dispute particularly striking.
Ocasio-Cortez has frequently faced criticism from Republicans and conservatives who believe her policies move the Democratic Party too far left.
Now she’s encountering the opposite complaint.
Some activists on the socialist left believe AOC hasn’t gone far enough.
The Bigger Political Problem For AOC
The disagreement could foreshadow a much larger battle if Ocasio-Cortez decides to pursue the presidency.
A national candidate needs support from a broad coalition encompassing voters with dramatically different views on the economy, foreign policy, crime, immigration and the proper role of government.
The positions that satisfy the most ideological activists don’t necessarily appeal to the wider electorate.
That tension isn’t unique to Ocasio-Cortez, but her long association with progressive politics makes it particularly significant.
For years, Republicans have portrayed AOC as a symbol of the Democratic Party’s movement to the left.
Now a faction within the socialist movement is effectively arguing the reverse: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez isn’t left-wing enough for them.
That may be the most revealing part of the entire fight.
With the 2028 presidential contest still well ahead, Ocasio-Cortez has plenty of time to decide her next move.
But one thing is already clear.
If AOC does make a run for the White House, she won’t only have Republicans and rival Democrats to worry about.
She could face a serious fight with some of the very socialist activists who once viewed her rise as a major political victory.
