Senate Moves On SSI Benefits

Here’s what happened.

The Senate is holding a hearing on Supplemental Security Income for the first time in 23 years. The hearing is to improve SSI to fit the needs of elderly and disabled Americans. This is to help elderly and disabled Americans come out of the poverty line.

Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown stated that the objective is so that no Americans is stuck under the poverty line. He added that congress needs to make this a priority for their upcoming legislation.

“The promise of Social Security is to ensure that no one in America should live in poverty – least of all our nation’s seniors and people with disabilities,” Brown said, “Congress must prioritize these long-overdue reforms as part of upcoming recovery legislation.”
