Red State To Ask Trump For Reimbursement

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Monday that the state is seeking billions of dollars in reimbursement from the federal government for money spent securing the southern border during what many conservatives describe as the worst border crisis in modern American history.

Abbott revealed that Texas is already working with the Trump administration to recover taxpayer funds used to combat illegal immigration while the Biden administration was in office.

“The Trump administration has opened the door for reimbursement,” Abbott said during an interview with NewsNation. “Texas is actively seeking repayment for the billions of dollars we spent securing the border because the federal government failed to do its job.”

For years, Texas taxpayers carried a burden that many state leaders argue should have belonged to Washington.

As illegal crossings surged under former President Joe Biden, Abbott launched an unprecedented border security operation that included deploying thousands of National Guard troops, constructing physical barriers, increasing law enforcement patrols, and taking aggressive action against human smuggling networks.

Texas officials repeatedly argued that the federal government had abandoned its responsibility to secure the nation’s border, forcing the state to step in.

The border crisis quickly became one of the defining issues of Biden’s presidency. Millions of migrants entered the United States during the period, fueling concerns about public safety, national security, drug trafficking, and the growing strain on schools, hospitals, and local communities.

As conditions worsened, Abbott’s administration explored legal arguments that the situation constituted an “invasion,” potentially giving Texas broader authority to defend itself under the Constitution.

By early 2024, more than 5,000 Texas National Guard members were stationed along the border. Several Republican-led states also sent personnel and resources to assist Texas in its efforts.

The issue became a central theme of the 2024 election, with President Donald Trump promising to restore border security, crack down on illegal immigration, and take stronger action against criminal cartels operating near the U.S.-Mexico border.

Since returning to office, Trump has implemented tougher immigration policies and expanded enforcement efforts. Supporters argue those actions have helped restore order at the border after years of chaos.

Now Texas leaders want taxpayers repaid.

Abbott argues that Texas spent billions protecting not only its own communities but the entire nation while the federal government failed to enforce existing immigration laws.

If the reimbursement request succeeds, it could mark one of the largest federal repayments ever sought by a state for border security operations.

For many Texans, the fight is no longer just about immigration. It is about accountability, taxpayer dollars, and whether states should be forced to shoulder the costs when Washington refuses to act.
