New York Attorney General Letitia James, one of the most outspoken critics of President Donald Trump, is facing a legal firestorm of her own.
A federal grand jury in Virginia has formally indicted the Democrat on charges of bank fraud and providing false information to a financial institution — the very offense she once claimed President Trump was guilty of.
In an ironic twist, James’s old social media post from February 2024 has resurfaced — and it’s coming back to haunt her. At the time, she posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“When powerful people cheat to get better loans, it comes at the expense of hardworking Americans. Everyday people can’t lie to a bank and get away with it.”
Now, prosecutors say that’s exactly what she did. According to court documents, James allegedly lied on mortgage forms while buying a Norfolk, Virginia property, falsely labeling it as a “second home” to qualify for better loan terms — and then rented it out to tenants for profit.
Prosecutors Drop the Hammer
U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan for the Eastern District of Virginia said James faces up to 30 years in prison per count, $1 million in fines per charge, and forfeiture of assets if convicted.
“No one is above the law,” Halligan declared — the same words James used when she bragged about taking down Trump.
The Hypocrisy That’s Hard to Ignore
Letitia James made national headlines for suing Trump’s business empire, securing a $500 million civil judgment, and calling herself a “champion of justice.” But now, she’s accused of doing exactly what she condemned.
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) blasted James for “weaponizing her office against Trump and his supporters.”
“Her hypocrisy is off the charts,” Stefanik said. “She campaigned on ‘no one is above the law,’ yet she’s now accused of committing the very fraud she pinned on President Trump.”
Stefanik’s repost of James’s old tweet went viral, with conservatives across the country calling it “karma” and “instant justice.” Social media lit up with laughter and disbelief at how the anti-Trump crusader had apparently exposed her own double standard.
Democrats in Damage Control
While James faces national ridicule, top Democrats are circling the wagons. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer claimed the case was “political revenge” by Trump’s Justice Department.
“This is what tyranny looks like,” Schumer said. “President Trump is targeting Attorney General Tish James for the ‘crime’ of prosecuting him — and winning. This isn’t justice. It’s revenge.”
James, however, insists she’s innocent. She told reporters she “made an error on a form” but never intended to deceive the bank. Her first court appearance is set for October 24 in Norfolk, Virginia, before Magistrate Judge Douglas E. Miller.
Poetic Justice?
For millions of Americans who watched James spend years attacking Trump, this moment feels like poetic justice. The same Democrat who claimed to be fighting corruption now faces the kind of accountability she said Trump deserved.
