Russia Condemns Trump

On Friday, Russia sharply criticized an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, which called for the development of a next-generation missile defense shield, accusing the U.S. of destabilizing global security and pushing the world closer to military confrontation—particularly in space.

Trump’s executive order, signed on Monday, laid the groundwork for an ambitious project to create a U.S.-based “Iron Dome.” This missile defense system is designed to protect against ballistic, hypersonic, cruise missiles, and other aerial threats. The White House justified the initiative, stating that it was necessary to modernize an outdated defense infrastructure in order to address emerging threats from adversaries who are advancing their own missile and delivery systems.

However, Russia’s Foreign Ministry did not hold back in its response. Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova argued that this new U.S. missile defense plan was primarily aimed at eroding the nuclear deterrent capabilities of both Russia and China, weakening their ability to protect themselves. Zakharova criticized the move as a direct threat to the global balance of power, saying it would undermine any future efforts for arms control negotiations—a priority for both Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zakharova also raised concerns over the potential militarization of space, warning that the U.S. was positioning itself to deploy weapons in space, which would add a dangerous new dimension to global warfare. She emphasized that this would not reduce tensions but rather escalate them, making it harder to establish any meaningful dialogue on strategic arms reduction.

The White House, while focusing on the missile defense system’s role in strengthening U.S. security, framed it as a means of ensuring peace through strength. The administration argued that the Iron Dome would act as a deterrent against any potential attacks on the U.S., solidifying America’s second-strike capability.

Despite the growing tension, both Trump and Putin have expressed interest in meeting face-to-face to discuss a range of issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, Moscow has yet to receive any concrete proposals from Washington regarding such a summit.
