Former President Donald Trump continues to hold a commanding lead in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, according to a new poll from Quinnipiac University. Trump receives 62% support among Republican and Republican-leaning voters, up slightly from 57% in August.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is in second place with 12% support, followed by entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy with 6%, former United Nations Ambassador and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and former Vice President Mike Pence with 5% each, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott with 3%, and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie with 2%. All other listed Republican candidates receive less than 2% support.

The poll also found that a majority of Republican and Republican-leaning voters who support a candidate in the 2024 Republican presidential primary are not yet firmly set on their choice. Half say they might change their candidate choice depending on what happens leading up to the primary. However, among those voters supporting Trump, a much higher percentage (68%) are firmly set on him.

These results suggest that Trump is still the clear frontrunner in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. However, the race is still far from over and things could change between now and the primary. DeSantis and other potential candidates could make gains if they are able to mount a strong challenge to Trump.

It is still too early to say who will win the 2024 presidential election, but the Quinnipiac poll provides some interesting insights into the early state of the race.
