Speaker Johnson Calls Out Biden and Kamala
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) recently expressed strong criticism of the federal government’s handling of Hurricane Helene, labeling the response a “massive failure” given the number of individuals still unaccounted for in the aftermath. Speaking with Shannon Bream on “Fox News Sunday,” Johnson emphasized that his firsthand observations in affected areas like Georgia and Florida revealed deep dissatisfaction among those directly impacted.
“I’ve seen the devastation in person, and the frustration is palpable. People on the ground are saying this is an abject failure of federal response,” Johnson stated. He underscored that federal agencies had ample time to prepare, with more than a week’s notice before the storm made landfall. “Despite that preparation time, many victims are still waiting for the help they need. In North Carolina, it’s heartbreaking to witness the federal government’s shortcomings during such a critical moment,” he added.
As the midterm elections approach, Republican leaders are sharpening their critiques of the federal disaster response, aiming to hold the administration accountable for perceived inefficiencies. In contrast, some officials, such as Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), have defended the federal efforts, suggesting that the scale of devastation exceeded initial expectations. “For anyone to believe that any level of government could have been fully prepared for such an unprecedented event is misguided,” Tillis remarked.
The Biden administration has been proactive in countering these criticisms. FEMA has launched a dedicated “rumor response page” to combat misinformation regarding available resources for affected residents. White House spokesperson Andrew Bates pointed to bipartisan praise for the federal response, citing supportive comments from leaders across both parties, including South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp.
As this situation unfolds, it’s evident that the Republican Party remains focused on ensuring accountability and advocating for the needs of those affected by natural disasters, making the effective management of federal resources a priority as they head toward the election season. The conversation around Hurricane Helene is likely to continue, underscoring the crucial balance between government preparedness and effective disaster response.
