Europe Urged To Back Trump
Former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Kurt Volker says European leaders should appreciate Mark Rutte for maintaining strong and respectful relations with President Donald Trump during the growing crisis involving Iran.
During an interview on Politico’s EU Confidential podcast, Volker said Rutte’s supportive tone toward Trump is helping preserve unity between America and Europe at a time of rising global instability.
He explained that Rutte’s diplomatic approach gives European governments breathing room while ensuring communication with Washington remains productive and focused on shared goals.
Former Envoy Warns Europe Against Public Criticism
Volker cautioned European leaders against publicly attacking President Trump over military action involving Iran. He said disagreements can be handled privately, but public criticism risks weakening one of the world’s most important security partnerships.
According to Volker, Europe should focus on practical cooperation instead of political theater.
He suggested leaders should emphasize their willingness to help protect shipping lanes, stabilize the Persian Gulf, and defend global energy markets.

Volker also backed Trump’s broader Iran policy, saying firm leadership was necessary to stop Tehran from moving closer to nuclear weapons capability.
He dismissed repeated claims that Iran’s nuclear ambitions are peaceful and said the regime has spent years pursuing dangerous leverage over the region.
The former ambassador also defended Trump’s earlier withdrawal from the Obama-era nuclear agreement, calling the deal ineffective and unable to stop Iran’s long-term objectives.
