According to White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates, Biden sought medical attention several days after the debate to monitor his recovery from the cold. During the meeting with over 20 governors, prompted by a query about his health, the 81-year-old president disclosed his recent checkup and expressed his well-being, even playfully knocking on wood, as reported by Politico.
Earlier that day, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had avoided direct inquiries from journalists regarding the president’s health evaluation post-debate, reiterating the administration’s commitment to releasing comprehensive annual physical reports.
The meeting with governors, convened hastily and lasting an hour, reflected mounting concerns within the Democratic Party regarding Biden’s age, cognitive fitness, and his capacity to serve another term. Despite these concerns, governors who are seen as potential successors to Biden publicly voiced their support for him, emphasizing their commitment with phrases like “in it to win it.”
Following the meeting, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer affirmed her endorsement of Biden via Twitter, echoing the sentiments expressed during the session. However, only a few governors stayed to address the media afterward, with New York Gov. Kathy Hochul asserting that all governors present had pledged their support to Biden given the high stakes involved.
Behind the scenes, Democratic staffers reportedly remain apprehensive about Biden’s political trajectory, with ongoing discussions among potential successors. Sources indicated that Biden himself had hinted at the possibility of stepping aside if he did not regain political momentum in the near future, reflecting internal deliberations within the party about its leadership moving forward.
