VIDEO: Cheney Threatens Republicans
Former Representative Liz Cheney reiterated her warning to Republicans in light of the recent indictment of former President Donald Trump in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case on Thursday.
According to Newsweek, Donald Trump is facing a total of 37 charges, which include allegations of willfully retaining classified documents and obstructing justice. These charges stem from the Department of Justice’s investigation into potential mishandling of classified materials after Trump left office in January 2021. The investigation is being led by special counsel Jack Smith. Federal prosecutors claim that Trump mishandled sensitive presidential records and impeded government efforts to recover them. Despite the charges, Trump maintains his innocence and accuses the prosecutors of pursuing a politically motivated investigation.
In response to the indictment of former President Donald Trump, Liz Cheney, a prominent Wyoming Republican who has been a vocal critic of Trump, referred back to her previous warning regarding him. This comes shortly after Cheney herself was indicted in a separate case related to an alleged campaign finance violation involving a hush money payment during the 2016 election.
On Friday, Liz Cheney took to Twitter and shared a video of a warning she delivered during a hearing of the House select committee on June 9, 2022. The committee was responsible for investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and allegations of Donald Trump’s involvement in attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.
“Tonight, I say this to my Republican colleagues. You are defending the indefensible. There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain,” Cheney said in the video.
Accompanying her post, Liz Cheney emphasized that her warning from one year ago remains relevant and applicable to her fellow Republicans. She captioned her tweet by stating, “I said this one year ago tonight. It still applies.”
After previously supporting Donald Trump, Liz Cheney underwent a notable transformation and emerged as one of his most outspoken critics within the Republican Party. This shift in her stance came following the Capitol insurrection, where a group of Trump supporters, driven by his baseless claims of election fraud, engaged in a violent protest at the Capitol building. Their objective was to prevent Congress from certifying President Joe Biden’s victory in the Electoral College, but their efforts ultimately failed.
