Democrat Says Musk Compromised What?

Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) has raised serious concerns over the growing influence of Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), warning that Americans’ private tax records could be at risk. Appearing on CNN with Jake Tapper, Murphy highlighted a troubling development: Musk’s allies, reportedly working with DOGE, were granted access to the Treasury Department’s federal payment systems over the weekend. This sparked alarm, particularly among Democrats who fear it could open the door for potential misuse of sensitive taxpayer information.

Murphy didn’t hold back, stressing that the American public has every right to be concerned. “Of course I do,” he said when asked about DOGE’s access to the Treasury’s systems. “Every American needs to know that your personal tax records may have been compromised, and that unelected billionaires and their Silicon Valley allies may now have access to your private information.” With the Treasury Department managing over $6 trillion annually, which includes Social Security, Medicare, federal employee salaries, government contractor payments, and tax refunds, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

The controversy escalated further when David Lebryk, a key career official at the Treasury Department, retired after disputes over the system’s access. Meanwhile, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) demanded transparency from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, pressing for clarity on the level of access Musk’s team has been granted.

Senator Murphy slammed DOGE’s justification for their involvement, which they claim is to ensure government spending aligns with President Trump’s priorities. “That’s just a euphemism for saying they’re directing funds to people loyal to Trump, while withholding from those who are not,” Murphy charged. He warned that the group’s influence may expand beyond government contracts, potentially reaching tax refunds, which would directly impact everyday Americans. “This is a dangerous moment for our country,” Murphy concluded, “and it’s one that could have far-reaching consequences for everyone.”
