President Biden’s recent actions during a public event in Florida stirred controversy, particularly among Catholic circles. As Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried criticized an upcoming law limiting abortion to six weeks of gestation, Biden, a self-proclaimed practicing Catholic, made the sign of the cross, seemingly in response to Fried’s remarks about Governor Ron DeSantis’ efforts to restrict abortion further.

This gesture, commonly associated with Catholic prayer, took place at a moment when Fried expressed dissatisfaction with the existing 15-week limit on abortion, implying mockery towards DeSantis’ stance. Critics, including prominent Catholic figures, condemned Biden’s actions as sacrilegious and a betrayal of Catholic teachings, which vehemently oppose abortion.

Kristan Hawkins, founder of Students for Life of America, called on fellow Catholics to denounce such actions, while organizations like 40 Days for Life characterized Biden’s gesture as a disrespectful appropriation of sacred symbolism in support of abortion rights. Brian Burch, president of CatholicVote, went further, accusing Biden of either ignorance, senility, or indifference towards the fundamental beliefs of millions of Christians in the country.

This incident adds fuel to existing skepticism about Biden’s religious commitment, as highlighted by a recent Pew Research poll indicating that a significant majority of Americans don’t view him as particularly devout. Despite Biden’s self-presentation as a faithful Catholic, only a minority of respondents considered him “very religious,” while a substantial portion regarded him as “not at all” or “not too religious.”

The Catholic Church’s stance on abortion, as outlined in the Catechism, unequivocally denounces it as a moral evil, a position that has remained consistent for centuries. Thus, Biden’s apparent endorsement of pro-abortion sentiments contradicts this core doctrine, further fueling criticism and skepticism regarding his religious identity.
