Ocasio-Cortez Barks Orders At Biden
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, has ordered President Joe Biden to ignore a federal court judge’s decision in Texas on Friday that halted the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the abortion medication mifepristone. The ruling could result in the abortion-inducing drug being banned for sale throughout the country.
In transcript provided by Newsmax, Ocasio-Cortez explained, “I believe the Biden administration should ignore this ruling. I think that the courts have the legitimacy, and they rely on the legitimacy of their rulings, and what they are currently doing is engaged in an unprecedented and dramatic erosion of the legitimacy of the courts.”
According to Politico, U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, who was nominated by former Republican President Donald Trump, has ruled in favor of anti-abortion activists who are contesting the FDA’s endorsement of the medication. This dates back to the initial authorization in 2000 and more recently allowing the pills to be prescribed through telemedicine, sent by mail, and made available at local pharmacies.
As per the report, on Friday night, the Biden administration lodged an appeal against the decision.
On the same Friday, U.S. District Judge Thomas O. Rice, appointed by former Democratic President Barack Obama and situated in Spokane, Washington, passed a contradicting order, directing the FDA to uphold the status quo. This conflicting decision could potentially lead to the matter being taken up by the U.S. Supreme Court.
As per the Politico report, the medication is typically employed in the initial 10 weeks of pregnancy to instigate an abortion and has emerged as the most prevalent abortion method in the United States.
Biden also attacked the state of Texas and said it was a “political attack.”
Biden explained, “Today, a single federal district judge in Texas ruled that a prescription medication that has been available for more than 22 years, approved by the FDA, and used safely and effectively by millions of women here and around the world, should no longer be approved in the United States. If this ruling were to stand, then there will be virtually no prescription approved by the FDA which would be safe from these kinds of political, ideological attacks. My administration will fight this ruling.”
