The discussions, spanning several hours, centered on strategies to bolster Trump’s fundraising efforts for his anticipated 2024 presidential run, particularly in narrowing the financial disparity between him and President Biden.
DeSantis, having secured a convincing re-election in 2022 and subsequently withdrawing from the 2024 Republican presidential race, possesses a robust network of affluent donors. This network could prove invaluable to Trump as he gears up for the upcoming general election campaign.
The initial report of the meeting emerged from The Washington Post, noting that the rendezvous was facilitated by Steve Witkoff, a Florida real estate broker known to both Trump and DeSantis. Sources disclosed to Fox News that the meeting’s groundwork was laid nearly a week and a half prior when DeSantis reached out to Witkoff.
Remarkably, this gathering marks the first known interaction between DeSantis and Trump since the former governor exited the presidential race following a lackluster performance in the Iowa caucuses. Throughout their respective campaigns, Trump and his allies frequently targeted DeSantis, culminating in a protracted contest for the Republican nomination.
Despite DeSantis suspending his presidential bid just before the New Hampshire primary and subsequently endorsing Trump, he has refrained from actively campaigning on Trump’s behalf. Notably, during a February conversation with supporters, DeSantis criticized Trump and his closest political confidants, suggesting lingering animosity from past professional clashes.
