Pelosi Cooks Up More Drama For Republicans
Rep. Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California, offered her counsel to fellow Democrats regarding their stance on a possible motion to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, during her appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” with host Jake Tapper on Sunday.
According to Fox, Tapper inquired about Pelosi’s position on voting for or against a motion against McCarthy and sought her advice for her Democratic colleagues on trusting McCarthy if he were to propose a deal to retain his speakership.
Pelosi replied, “I would advise my fellow Democrats to follow the lead of Hakeem Jeffries. He has demonstrated effective leadership. Just yesterday, we secured a victory in the continuing resolution. It was a triumph for Democrats and a setback for the more extreme factions.”
Pelosi then took the opportunity to criticize Rep. Matt Gaetz, who had appeared on the program before her, asserting that the Florida Republican held little influence within the House of Representatives.
Gaetz had indicated his intention to initiate a motion to remove McCarthy sometime in the coming week.
Pelosi dismissed Gaetz’s efforts, remarking, “You’re wasting your time on that guy, because he has no sway in the House of Representatives, except to get on TV and to raise money on the Internet.”
Several House Republicans had expressed dissatisfaction with McCarthy’s handling of the funding negotiations. Rep. Byron Donalds, a Republican from Florida, mentioned on “Fox News Sunday” that the speaker was facing difficulties following the passage of the short-term deal on Saturday.
Donalds contended that the deal, which funded the government until November, did not yield favorable outcomes for Republicans. However, he stopped short of explicitly stating whether he would support a motion to remove McCarthy.
Donalds characterized Saturday’s deal as a victory for Democrats. House Democratic Leader Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, concurred with this assessment, asserting that “MAGA Republicans” had conceded defeat.
