Democrat Governor Escalates Fight With Trump’s ICE

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger is facing growing criticism from conservatives after signing a new executive order that limits how federal immigration agents can operate on state property.

The move marks the latest escalation in the ongoing battle between Democratic governors and the Trump administration over immigration enforcement policies.

Under the order, agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly known as ICE, are prohibited from conducting arrests on state-owned property without a warrant. The order also blocks federal agents from using state facilities as staging areas for immigration operations.

Spanberger defended the decision by claiming increased immigration enforcement activity was creating fear in some communities across Virginia. The governor said some children were hesitant to attend school while some workers reportedly feared going to their jobs due to heightened ICE activity.

The executive order comes just months after Spanberger reversed a policy put in place by former Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin. That policy encouraged cooperation between Virginia law enforcement agencies and federal immigration officials through 287(g) agreements, which allow local authorities to assist with immigration enforcement efforts.

Conservatives argue the rollback weakens cooperation with federal authorities at a time when illegal immigration and border security remain top concerns for many Americans.

At the same time, Spanberger has attempted to balance pressure from the progressive wing of her party. She recently vetoed legislation that would have blocked ICE agents from carrying out administrative immigration arrests at schools, polling places, and courthouses.

The governor argued the proposal could create legal conflicts between local police departments and federal authorities. Republicans praised the veto but continued to criticize her broader immigration agenda as an attempt to interfere with federal law enforcement operations.

Meanwhile, progressive activists argued Spanberger did not go far enough to protect immigrants living in the country illegally from deportation actions.

The growing controversy has fueled debate over Spanberger’s political transformation since taking office.

During her years in Congress, the former CIA officer built a reputation as a moderate Democrat focused on bipartisan cooperation, fiscal responsibility, and appealing to suburban swing voters. Throughout her gubernatorial campaign, she frequently presented herself as a pragmatic problem-solver rather than an ideological activist.

Since becoming governor, however, critics say Spanberger has moved noticeably left on several high-profile issues, especially immigration enforcement, cultural debates, and opposition to President Donald Trump’s policy agenda.

For many conservatives, the clash reflects a broader trend within today’s Democratic Party, where moderates often campaign from the center but govern under increasing pressure from progressive activists once in office.
