Trump Ally Running For California Governor
Richard Grenell, a trusted ally of President Trump who served as his special envoy for “special missions” and interim executive director of the Kennedy Center, has hinted at a potential run for California governor. This comes on the heels of speculation that Vice President Kamala Harris may pursue the position. If Harris decides to enter the race, Grenell sees an opportunity for Republicans to take back control of the Golden State.
“If Kamala Harris runs for governor, I believe her record is so tainted that the voters will finally wake up to the fact that she’s not the leader California needs,” Grenell remarked. “With her controversial track record and the millions spent trying to convince voters otherwise, this could be the chance for a Republican to make significant strides in California politics. I wouldn’t rule out running myself.”
Grenell, a former acting director of national intelligence and an influential figure during the Trump administration, has flirted with the idea of running for governor before. In 2021, he considered challenging Governor Gavin Newsom (D) in the recall election, but ultimately decided to withdraw just before the deadline. Newsom is term-limited in 2026, creating an open field for both Republican and Democratic candidates.
Recent polling indicates Harris would be a formidable contender in a Democratic primary, with Emerson College Polling, Insider California Politics, and The Hill showing her at 57% support. However, former Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) is a distant second with just 9%.
Harris has not fully committed to a gubernatorial run, stating that while she has returned to California briefly, she is still focused on her role as vice president. However, she didn’t completely dismiss the idea of seeking the governor’s mansion either.
Winning the California governorship will be no easy feat for Republicans, as the state has shifted increasingly to the left in recent years. The last time a Republican held the office was in 2006 when Arnold Schwarzenegger secured his second term. Despite this, with growing frustration among voters about the state’s leadership, a Republican candidate like Grenell might be able to make significant inroads in 2026.
