Kamala Wins The Asian Vote?
Recent polling data reveals a shift in the political landscape regarding Asian American voters, with Vice President Kamala Harris gaining notable support. A survey conducted by the National Opinion Research Center indicates that 66% of Asian American respondents favor Harris, while only 28% express support for former President Donald Trump. This poll included responses from 1,105 Asian American voters and carries a margin of error of ±5.1%.
The findings signal a significant change from earlier this year when President Biden’s campaign faced declining support among Asian Americans. At that time, only 46% of Asian American voters indicated they would back Biden, marking an 8-point decrease from the 54% support he garnered in the 2020 election.
Harris’s rising favorability is noteworthy, with 62% of participants viewing her positively—a substantial improvement over Biden’s earlier figures. In contrast, Trump maintains only a 28% favorability rating among this demographic. It’s clear that Harris’s presidential campaign has resonated more effectively with these voters compared to Biden’s earlier efforts.
Moreover, the poll highlights a competitive edge for Democratic candidates like Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, who enjoys a 56% favorability among Asian Americans, significantly outpacing Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio, who is viewed favorably by just over a quarter of respondents.
Interestingly, voter engagement within the Asian American community appears to be on the rise. A remarkable 77% of those surveyed expressed certainty about their intention to vote, up from 68% in previous polls conducted in the spring.
For Republicans, this shift underscores the need for a strategic approach to connect with Asian American voters. Engaging with their unique concerns and priorities could be key to enhancing GOP appeal in this vital demographic ahead of the upcoming elections.
