Former President Donald Trump shared his wife’s concerns about his 2024 presidential campaign during a recent rally in Iowa. Speaking at the event in Sioux City, Iowa, on a Sunday, Trump revealed that former first lady Melania Trump is not a fan of his theatrical performances and dancing, as she doesn’t consider them to be “presidential.”
According to Newsweek, while discussing the topic of transgender athletes, Trump paused and asked the audience if he should continue, acknowledging that “Our first lady hates it.” He recounted Melania’s words, saying, “She says, ‘Darling, I love you very much, but this is not the behavior expected of a president. Whether it’s weightlifting, swimming, or dancing off the stage,’ ” he said, mimicking lifting a barbell.
Trump continued, “She told me, ‘Darling, I love you, I really do, but this is not what one would expect from a president! You shouldn’t be dancing off the stage. It’s not presidential.'” He responded, “Well, we still have a year to go, everyone loves us, and I love everyone. The country is facing numerous challenges, so why not have a little fun and dance?”
This isn’t the first time Trump has discussed Melania’s feelings about his dancing and impersonations of transgender athletes. He mentioned, “She mentioned that it’s not presidential, and I understand her concerns. She also doesn’t appreciate when I dance to the [campaign] music, but I find it challenging because the audience wants it. They’re chanting ‘dance, dance, dance.'”
Despite Melania’s reservations about her husband’s dance moves on stage, she has expressed support for his campaign in her only interview since he announced his third White House bid. She told Fox News in May that “My husband achieved tremendous success in his first administration, and he can lead us toward greatness and prosperity once again,” adding that they “look forward to restoring hope for the future and leading America with love and strength.”
Besides this interview, Melania has mostly stayed out of the public eye. Many observers have noted her absence from her husband’s campaign events and various legal proceedings, including his four arraignments this year. Trump has explained that the “mystery” surrounding Melania is something that Americans appreciate. He said, “She doesn’t need to be in the spotlight or give interviews. She is confident and has a strong sense of self-assurance,” during an interview with Megyn Kelly last month.
