Stephanie Grisham, who served as White House press secretary under President Donald Trump, is set to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris at the upcoming Democratic National Convention. Grisham, who worked closely with Trump for over five years, resigned from her position in January 2021. In recent times, she has publicly criticized Trump, citing his brand of “extremism” as a primary reason for her shift in allegiance.
“I never imagined I would be speaking at a Democratic convention,” Grisham told NBC. “However, after witnessing the true nature of Donald Trump and the potential threat he represents to our country, I feel compelled to speak out.”
Despite her endorsement of Harris, Grisham acknowledged that she doesn’t align with the Vice President on every issue. “I may not agree with Vice President Harris on all fronts, but I am confident that she will safeguard our freedoms and lead with integrity and honesty,” Grisham stated.
Grisham’s endorsement will be highlighted as she addresses Harris’s supporters on Tuesday evening during the convention’s second night. Her transition from a key Trump ally to a vocal critic is a significant political shift.
Starting her career with the Trump campaign as a press aide in 2015, Grisham later became the White House press secretary and communications director. She also held the position of chief spokeswoman for Melania Trump. Despite several attempts by the former first lady to persuade her to stay, Grisham ultimately resigned due to the events surrounding the January 6 Capitol riot.
Trump has consistently denied any role in inciting the violence of January 6, citing his calls for “no violence” and urging his supporters to “remain peaceful” on social media. However, Grisham’s resignation was a direct response to the riot, which she described as the “breaking point” in her decision to leave the administration.
Since her departure, Grisham has become a staunch critic of Trump, accusing him of pressuring her to disseminate false information. In response to her allegations, Trump labeled Grisham as “lying,” further intensifying their contentious relationship.
