Biden Says Trump Can't Fix The Border If Re-Elected, Is He Right?

Liberals Destroy America’s History

Even Democrats don’t want to do this and it’s kind of hilarious.

A coalition comprising various African American organizations in Maryland is advocating for the renaming of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge during its reconstruction, citing concerns over the racism associated with Key’s legacy.

The Caucus of African American Leaders of Anne Arundel County recently voted unanimously to propose changing the names of two bridges in Maryland, including the Key Bridge. They intend to urge Democratic Gov. Wes Moore and the state’s Democrat-controlled General Assembly to consider their proposal. This initiative comes after the bridge’s collapse in late March due to a cargo ship striking a support beam.

Among the coalition’s members are organizations such as an NAACP chapter and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. They advocate for renaming the replacement bridge in honor of the late Rep. Parren Mitchell, Maryland’s first African American elected to the U.S. House, who was also a civil rights trailblazer as the first Black graduate student admitted to the University of Maryland.

In response to inquiries about the proposal, Governor Moore emphasized his focus on providing closure to affected families, clearing the channel, and rebuilding the bridge. However, he hinted at the possibility of discussing the renaming issue at a later time.

A spokesperson for the Caucus of African American Leaders emphasized their belief that public structures and buildings funded by taxpayers should not bear the names of individuals who owned slaves. They argue that Key’s legacy is tainted with accusations of racism, citing instances where he owned enslaved individuals alongside representing Black Marylanders in court seeking their freedom.

Key, renowned as the author of the U.S. national anthem, faced criticism for his alleged racist remarks. However, some disputes arose concerning the accuracy of these attributions, with the Star Spangled Banner Foundation refuting the authenticity of certain quotes attributed to him.

Social media discussions, particularly among conservatives, speculated about the possibility of renaming the Key Bridge amid efforts to reevaluate historical figures with controversial pasts. However, responses from political figures, including Rep. David Trone, Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, and Maryland Senate candidate Larry Hogan’s campaigns, were not available at the time of publication.

Democratic Rep. Kweisi Mfume, whose district includes the Key Bridge, also did not provide a comment on the proposal.
