Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer commented in a Wednesday interview that she sees no harm in President Biden undergoing a cognitive test, amidst ongoing debates about his capacity to serve as the Democratic party’s nominee for president.
Speaking with CNN’s Abby Phillip, Whitmer responded to questions about whether Biden should take a cognitive test and also advocate for Donald Trump to do the same. “I don’t think that it’d hurt, to be honest,” she reiterated when asked to clarify her position.
The suggestion comes in the context of increasing demands for Biden to prove his cognitive abilities following a less-than-stellar debate performance last month and several reports hinting at a potential decline in recent months. These concerns escalated with disclosures that a neurologist specializing in Parkinson’s disease visited the White House, though the administration clarified that this doctor has been a consultant for the White House Medical Unit for over a decade.
Calls for cognitive assessments have not just been limited to Whitmer. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley have both voiced that such tests should be mandatory for older politicians.
In her role as a national co-chair for the Biden-Harris reelection campaign, Whitmer acknowledged Biden’s debate struggles but continued to praise his dedication. “He is the happy warrior that shows up every day and fights for the American public, putting others before himself,” she said. This commitment is crucial, she argued, especially when contrasted with Donald Trump, whom she noted has been convicted of multiple felonies and is perceived as self-serving.
Whitmer also addressed the broader electoral landscape, emphasizing the need to rally behind Biden unless he decides otherwise, signaling her support for the current field of candidates. She also didn’t dismiss the possibility of joining the ticket as Vice President Harris’s running mate should the situation arise.
Amid these discussions, some Democrats, including Senator Peter Welch of Vermont and nine House members, have publicly urged Biden to consider stepping down. Nonetheless, many within the party continue to affirm their support for Biden, echoing his narrative of being the legitimate choice of the Democratic electorate.
she’s been “unglued” for a very long time, what I want to know is why she isn’t wearing her war paint?
Exactly! Why?,
