President-elect Donald Trump expressed his frustration on Friday, criticizing Democrats for their apparent “giddiness” over the fact that flags would be flown at half-staff during his inauguration on January 20. This decision was made to honor the late President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100, marking the end of the longest life ever lived by an American president.

As per a tradition outlined in a proclamation by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, flags are to be lowered for 30 days following the death of a former president. The flag will be at half-staff at all federal buildings, military installations, and naval vessels during this period, which will coincide with the swearing-in of President Trump.

Trump took to Truth Social to voice his displeasure with what he described as Democrats’ “giddiness” over the flag’s position. He pointed out that while honoring the late Carter is a matter of respect, the Democrats seem more focused on how the timing of the half-staff order might affect his inauguration. According to Trump, their enthusiasm was more about undermining his presidency than paying genuine tribute to a former president. He expressed that no patriotic American could find joy in such a situation, arguing that this reflected a deeper disregard for the country’s unity.

While the White House was asked about the issue, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the flag’s half-staff status would remain as planned, and there would be no reconsideration of the decision.

Despite their political differences, Trump has expressed respect for Carter’s commitment to the nation. In a statement following Carter’s death, Trump acknowledged that, although they often disagreed on policy, Carter “truly loved and respected our Country and all it stands for.” This tribute to the former president reflects Trump’s broader belief in patriotism and national pride, regardless of political affiliations.
