Donald Trump, the former president, has stirred controversy with his recent calls for the arrest of Special Counsel Jack Smith, following revelations that some evidence in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case might not be in its original state.
Expressing his outrage on Truth Social, Trump demanded the arrest of Smith, labeling him as a criminal. This outcry came after federal prosecutors disclosed discrepancies in the condition of certain materials retrieved from Trump’s Florida resort in August 2022.
Smith’s office acknowledged inconsistencies with prior government statements, which had assured the court that alterations were limited to the removal of classified documents and the insertion of placeholders. This admission came in response to a request from one of Trump’s co-defendants, Walt Nauta, seeking a trial delay due to difficulties in pinpointing the origins of specific documents post-FBI search.
In another social media post, Trump accused Smith of evidence tampering and urged for the dismissal of the case, branding it as an election interference scam orchestrated by political adversaries.
Federal prosecutors, however, offered plausible explanations for the discrepancies, citing factors such as the size and shape of items in the boxes, which could have caused them to shift during transportation.
They asserted that the precise arrangement of materials within the boxes is irrelevant to the case and does not justify delaying proceedings, refuting Nauta’s claims regarding the accuracy of document indexes provided to him.
Trump, along with his co-defendants, maintains their innocence against charges of retaining classified materials and obstructing federal investigations. The trial date, initially set for May 20, is expected to be postponed by Judge Aileen Cannon.
