McCarthy Helps Cheney, Backstabs Trump
In her upcoming book, “Oath and Honor,” former Representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) asserts that Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) relayed to her that former President Trump acknowledged his defeat in the 2020 presidential election just two days after the polls, as reported by various sources.
Cheney, who provided an exclusive release of her book to CNN ahead of its scheduled launch next Tuesday, criticizes the Republican Party and shares additional insights into her post-2020 election experiences.
According to CNN’s report on the book, McCarthy conveyed to Cheney that Trump recognized the election outcome with the words, “He knows it’s over.” McCarthy suggested that Trump needed to go through the stages of grief.
Cheney discloses that she visited Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort after the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, citing concerns about Trump not eating.
This narrative challenges persistent claims that Trump genuinely believed he won the 2020 election and took actions to resist leaving office.
As the vice chair of the House Jan. 6 select committee, Cheney has previously presented the case that Trump was aware of his loss to Joe Biden and attempted to overturn the election results. Trump currently faces two criminal cases related to his post-2020 election actions—one federal indictment and one state case in Georgia, alongside 18 other defendants.
Steven Cheung, the former president’s spokesperson, rejected Cheney’s claims, categorizing them as belonging to the “fiction section” and describing them as “completely fabricated stories,” according to CNN.
In her book, Cheney pledges to leave the Republican Party if Trump becomes the GOP nominee in 2024. She expresses a commitment to taking any necessary steps to prevent Trump’s return to the White House, including leaving the door open to a potential 2024 presidential bid of her own.
Cheney writes, “As a nation, we can endure damaging policies for a four-year term. But we cannot survive a president willing to terminate our Constitution,” highlighting her concerns about the impact of political expediency and loyalty to Trump on the nation’s foundational principles.
