Democrats Accuse Trump Of What?
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) recently launched a sharp attack on President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, accusing them of failing to follow through on their key campaign promises to reduce the cost of living for American families. Jeffries, speaking on ABC News’ This Week, argued that instead of delivering on their promises to lower costs, Republicans have allowed them to rise, putting a heavier financial burden on citizens.
“Republicans, including Donald Trump, promised to bring down the cost of living. Instead, they have done nothing but make it worse,” Jeffries stated. He pointed out that the cost of everyday essentials, like housing, groceries, and child care, continues to climb. “The cost of living is too high in this country, and everyday Americans are feeling the pressure. The Republican leadership has failed to keep their promise to lower costs and improve life for hard-working families,” he continued.
Jeffries also reaffirmed the Democrats’ stance against tax cuts benefiting the wealthy. He vowed that the party would continue to oppose any legislation that disproportionately benefits billionaires or large corporations, arguing that such cuts do little to help the average American worker. His remarks come amid ongoing debates about tax reform and wealth inequality.
During the interview, ABC’s Jonathan Karl pressed Jeffries about Trump’s rising popularity, citing recent polling data. Despite Trump’s higher favorability, Jeffries remained critical, emphasizing that Trump’s promise to reduce costs for Americans—especially with the promise of lower grocery prices—has not been realized. “We were promised on Day One, January 20th, that grocery prices would drop, but instead, we’ve seen prices skyrocket, especially on essentials like eggs,” Jeffries said.
In response, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) quickly fired back, accusing Jeffries of hypocrisy. “For years, the Democrat Party has worsened the economic situation, and now Hakeem Jeffries is trying to lecture us on how to fix it,” said NRCC spokesperson Mike Marinella. The back-and-forth illustrates the sharp division between the two parties as they approach the next election cycle.
