Trump Unleashes Even More Strikes
President Donald Trump ordered a new wave of U.S. airstrikes against Iran on Saturday after Iranian-backed forces launched a deadly attack on American military bases in Jordan that killed two U.S. service members. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation targeted military assets tied to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as tensions in the Middle East continued to intensify.
Military officials said the strikes began around 6 p.m. EDT and were designed to weaken Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes. The operation also aimed to punish the IRGC units that U.S. officials say were responsible for launching the missiles and drones used in Friday’s deadly attack on American forces in Jordan.
American Troops Killed in Jordan Attack
The Pentagon confirmed that two U.S. service members were killed during the attack on the military bases in Jordan. CENTCOM also reported that one American service member remains missing, raising concerns that the death toll could increase.
The latest casualties bring the total number of U.S. military personnel killed since the conflict began to 16, underscoring the growing danger facing American forces deployed across the region.
Four additional service members who were wounded in the attack were evacuated to hospitals in Jordan for treatment and have since been released. Military officials said other troops who suffered minor injuries have already returned to active duty.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth honored the fallen troops in a statement released Saturday.
“Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only strengthens our resolve.”
Trump Administration Increases Pressure on Iran
Saturday’s mission marked the eighth consecutive day of U.S. military operations against Iranian targets within CENTCOM’s area of responsibility, highlighting the Trump administration’s expanding campaign against Tehran.
In recent days, American forces have widened their list of targets, striking infrastructure believed to support Iran’s military operations. Those targets have included energy facilities, port infrastructure, bridges, and other strategic sites as President Trump increases pressure on the Iranian regime.
Administration officials say the goal is to reduce Iran’s ability to fund and coordinate future military operations while protecting American troops and preserving freedom of navigation in the Persian Gulf.
Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters
One of the primary objectives of the latest airstrikes was protecting commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The narrow waterway is one of the world’s busiest energy corridors, with a significant share of global oil exports passing through it every day. Any disruption to shipping in the region has the potential to drive higher fuel prices, disrupt global supply chains, and create economic uncertainty around the world.
U.S. officials have repeatedly warned that Iran has attempted to threaten commercial vessels operating in the area.
Iran Responds as Middle East Tensions Grow
Iran has continued to retaliate against U.S. and allied interests throughout the region, launching attacks on American military installations as well as critical infrastructure, including power facilities and desalination plants.
The ongoing exchange of strikes has fueled concerns that the conflict could expand into a broader regional war involving additional countries.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei accused the United States of violating an already fragile ceasefire and warned that Tehran would continue responding to American military action.
In a message posted on social media, Khamenei claimed the United States was escalating the conflict and warned that Iran and its regional allies would deliver consequences that would not soon be forgotten.
Conflict Shows No Signs of Slowing
With American forces continuing daily operations against Iranian targets and Tehran promising further retaliation, military analysts warn that the conflict remains highly volatile.
The latest exchange marks one of the most serious confrontations between the United States and Iran in years. As President Trump continues to increase military and economic pressure on Tehran, officials remain on high alert for additional attacks that could further destabilize the Middle East and threaten U.S. personnel stationed throughout the region.
